If they be poor, Allaah will enrich them out of His Bounty.” [Soorah an-Noor 24:32]. In the hadeeth of ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Aamir radiallaahu ‘anhu, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “The best dowry is that which is easy.” This was narrated by Abu Daawood and al-Haakim who authenticated it. And once a woman offered herself to the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam for marriage. However, one of his Companions desired to marry her, so the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said [regarding the mahr]: “Bring something, even if it be an iron ring.” So when he could not find even this, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam married them for the dowry that the man would teach whatever of the Qur’aan he knew to her. 2 And the dowry of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam’s wives was five-hundred dirhams, which is equivalent to one-hundred and thirty riyaals today. And his daughters were married for the mahr of four-hundred dinaars, which is equivalent to one-hundred riyaals today. Allaah – the Most High – said: “Indeed in the Messenger of Allaah you have a most beautiful example to follow.” [Soorah al-Ahzaab 33:21] So the difficulties related to marriage are lightened, then preserving the modesty and decency of young men and women becomes easier whenever shameful and evil deeds decrease, and the Ummah - as a result - will increase in number. However, if this matter is made difficult, and people continue competing with each other with regards to the mahr (dowry), then the number of marriages will decrease, fornication will become more widespread and more young men and women will remain unmarried – except those whom Allaah saves. She is diligent and wants to improve herself Islamically and in all aspects, without polytheism, innovation, arrogance or major sins (music, arrogance, etc.). She is affectionate, loving, and caring. She wants to enjoy goodness and forbid evil with her husband and those around her who are good people. He says: Allah the Almighty - who is free from all faults - says: {And marry those among you who are single and marry those among your rulers and your slave girls who are righteous. If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty.} [Surat An-Nur: 32]. In the hadith of Uqbah bin Amir, may God be pleased with him, the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “The best dowry is that which is easy.” Narrated by Abu Dawud and Al-Hakim, who authenticated it. Once, a woman offered herself to the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, for marriage. But some of his companions wanted to marry her, so the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “Bring her even if it is an iron ring.” When he could not find even that, the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, married them on the condition that the man would teach her what he knew of the Qur’an. The dowry of the wives of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, was Five hundred dirhams, which is equivalent to one hundred and thirty riyals today. And he married his daughters for a dowry of four hundred dinars, which is equivalent to one hundred riyals today. God Almighty said: {Indeed, in the Messenger of God you have an excellent pattern} [Al-Ahzab: 21]. So if the difficulties of marriage are reduced, Maintaining modesty and chastity among young men and women has become easier, and indecencies and wrongdoings have decreased, and the nation has multiplied as a result. But if this matter is made difficult, and people continue to compete over the dowry, then the cases of marriage will decrease, adultery will increase, and single young men and women will increase - except for those whom Allah has saved.
