I'm a postgraduate student of Birmingham City University, UK and a proud Nigerian Muslim who places greater premium on family values and enjoys having family time a lot. My principle of life is: Family First and a man’s family starts with his wife and their kids not forgetting parents and parents in-law. After all, the Prophet (صلعم) said: خيركم، خير لاهله “the best among you is the best in character with his households” Honesty is a virtue I treasure tremendously while despising lies as a liar would have to lie a multiple times more to cover-up the initial falsehood. I’m equally a devout Muslim who’s conscious of his religious obligations with an above-basic Islamic knowledge and understanding to distinguish between people’s culture and Islamic culture having attended the Prestigious Arabic and Islamic Training Center, Lagos, Nigeria, for five years before moving on to study Electrical Engineering. An hadith of the Prophet said: لنا عدات ولغيرنا عادات "we (refering to the Arabs) have our own culture and others have their cultures too". My Islamic background however, makes it easy to identify where the line is drawn between culture and religion. The Qur’an says: وان جاهداك علي ان تشرك بي ما ليس لك به علم فلا تطعهما وصاحبهما في الدنيا معروفا "but if they compel you to ascribe or associate with me of which you have no knowledge or proof, then don’t obey them, but keep their company in this world with kindness" سورة لقمان اية ١٥ Culturally speaking, if a Nigerian dresses in his native attire, Agbada, and an Emirati from UAE puts on a Jalabia, they are both fulfilling their religious requirement of modesty in dressing while adhering to their cultural appeal and heritage. If a Canadian lady or an Ameeican or a British girl however, decides to adorn herself in an Arabian Abaya rather than a suit, it should be out of her own volition and willingness to do so and not a religious obligation as some Muslims around the world today would have us believe. All that being said, I'm a proud single father of 2 adorable children and they will forever be part of my life.
